Reduce signs of aging for a more youthful appearance.
*A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that lifts, reshapes, and repositions aging facial and neck tissues to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance. By addressing sagging skin, jowls, deep facial folds, and loss of definition along the jawline and neck, a facelift can create smoother, firmer, and more natural-looking contours. Incisions are typically placed discreetly around the ears and within the hairline to minimize visible scarring.
A facelift is a highly customized procedure, with the surgical approach tailored to each patient’s anatomy, degree of aging, and aesthetic goals. Often performed under general anesthesia, a facelift may be combined with procedures such as a neck lift, eyelid surgery, fat transfer, or skin rejuvenation treatments to enhance overall facial harmony. Modern facelift techniques focus on repositioning the deeper facial structures rather than simply tightening the skin, helping achieve long-lasting, natural-looking results without an over-tightened appearance. Recovery varies based on the extent of surgery, but the goal remains the same: to restore a refreshed, youthful appearance while preserving each patient’s unique facial character.
Who is a good candidate for Facelift
A facelift may be an excellent option for individuals who are bothered by visible signs of aging in the face and neck that cannot be effectively addressed with non-surgical treatments alone. Common concerns include sagging skin, jowls, deep creases around the nose and mouth, loss of jawline definition, and loose skin in the neck. Ideal candidates are generally in good overall health, maintain realistic expectations, and are looking for long-lasting facial rejuvenation. Age alone does not determine candidacy, as the condition of the skin, underlying facial structures, and individual goals are often more important factors. During a consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy, discuss your concerns, and recommend a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve natural-looking results.
Facelift Benefits and Results
A facelift is designed to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance by addressing many of the most common signs of facial aging. The procedure can tighten loose skin, reduce jowls, improve facial contours, soften deep folds around the mouth, and restore definition to the jawline and neck. Modern facelift techniques focus on repositioning the deeper facial tissues rather than simply pulling the skin tight, resulting in more natural and longer-lasting outcomes. While a facelift cannot stop the aging process, it can help patients look significantly younger and more rested while maintaining their unique facial characteristics and expressions.
Facelift vs. Non-Surgical Treatments
Many patients considering facial rejuvenation wonder whether a facelift is necessary or if non-surgical treatments can provide similar results. Injectable fillers, neuromodulators, skin tightening procedures, and energy-based treatments can be effective for addressing early signs of aging and maintaining facial appearance. However, these treatments have limitations and cannot remove excess skin or reposition deeper facial tissues. A facelift remains the most effective option for patients with moderate to significant skin laxity, jowling, and facial sagging. While non-surgical treatments can complement a facelift or delay surgery for some patients, they generally cannot match the degree or longevity of surgical rejuvenation.
Types of Facelift Procedures
There are several types of facelift procedures available, each designed to address different levels of facial aging and patient goals. Options may include a mini facelift for mild to moderate aging, a traditional facelift for more advanced concerns, a deep plane facelift that repositions deeper facial structures, or an SMAS facelift that focuses on lifting supportive facial tissues. Some patients may also benefit from combining a facelift with a neck lift for more comprehensive rejuvenation. Because every face ages differently, the most appropriate facelift technique is determined through a thorough consultation and individualized treatment planning.
Facelift Recovery and Downtime
Recovery after a facelift varies depending on the extent of surgery and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time. Most patients experience swelling, bruising, tightness, and mild discomfort during the first several days following surgery. While many individuals feel comfortable returning to social activities within two to three weeks, subtle swelling can continue to improve for several months. Following post-operative instructions, avoiding strenuous activities during the healing period, and attending follow-up appointments are important parts of the recovery process. Most patients find that the temporary recovery period is well worth the long-term benefits of their results.
Facelift Scars and Incisions
One of the most common concerns among facelift patients is the appearance of scars. Facelift incisions are carefully planned and strategically placed around the ears, within natural skin creases, and often within the hairline to help conceal them as much as possible. While some scarring is unavoidable with any surgical procedure, facelift scars typically heal well and become less noticeable over time. Advances in surgical techniques allow surgeons to create natural-looking results while minimizing visible signs of surgery. Proper wound care, sun protection, and adherence to post-operative instructions can further support optimal scar healing.
How Long Do Facelift Results Last?
Although a facelift cannot stop the natural aging process, it can provide long-lasting improvements that many patients enjoy for a decade or longer. The longevity of facelift results depends on several factors, including surgical technique, skin quality, genetics, lifestyle habits, and sun exposure. Patients continue to age naturally after surgery, but they generally maintain a more youthful appearance than if they had never undergone the procedure. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure, and following a good skincare routine can help preserve facelift results for many years.
Facelift and Neck Lift Combination
A facelift and neck lift are frequently performed together because aging of the face and neck often occurs simultaneously. While a facelift focuses on improving the cheeks, jawline, and lower face, a neck lift addresses loose neck skin, muscle banding, excess fat, and loss of definition beneath the chin. Combining these procedures can create a smoother transition between the face and neck, resulting in more balanced and harmonious rejuvenation. For many patients, treating both areas together provides more comprehensive and natural-looking results than addressing either area alone.
Facelift and Neck Lift Differences
Although a facelift and neck lift are often discussed together, they are designed to address different areas of concern. A facelift primarily focuses on improving signs of aging in the cheeks, lower face, jawline, and areas around the mouth, while a neck lift targets loose skin, excess fat, muscle banding, and aging changes beneath the chin and throughout the neck. Some patients may benefit from a neck lift alone if their facial appearance remains relatively youthful, while others may require both procedures to achieve optimal facial rejuvenation. Understanding the differences between these procedures can help patients make informed decisions about their treatment options.
Combining a Facelift with Other Facial Rejuvenation Procedures
Many patients choose to combine a facelift with additional facial rejuvenation procedures to achieve more comprehensive results. Common complementary procedures include neck lift surgery, eyelid surgery, brow lift surgery, facial fat transfer, laser skin resurfacing, and injectable treatments. While a facelift effectively addresses sagging tissues and skin laxity, additional procedures can improve skin quality, restore lost facial volume, and rejuvenate areas not directly treated by a facelift. Combining procedures often allows patients to achieve a more balanced, youthful appearance while minimizing the need for multiple recovery periods.
PDO Thread Lift vs Facelift
PDO thread lifts and facelift surgery are both intended to improve facial sagging, but they differ significantly in their approach, effectiveness, and longevity. A PDO thread lift uses dissolvable sutures placed beneath the skin to provide a temporary lifting effect while stimulating collagen production. This minimally invasive procedure may be appropriate for younger patients with mild skin laxity who are seeking subtle improvements with little downtime. A facelift, however, surgically lifts and repositions deeper facial structures while removing excess skin, allowing for more dramatic, comprehensive, and longer-lasting rejuvenation. Patients with moderate to significant facial aging typically achieve superior and more predictable results with facelift surgery. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each option can help patients select the treatment that best aligns with their goals and expectations.
Facelift Risks and Safety
Like any surgical procedure, a facelift carries potential risks and complications that should be carefully considered. Possible risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, delayed healing, temporary or permanent numbness, nerve injury, asymmetry, and the need for revision surgery. Fortunately, serious complications are uncommon when surgery is performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. A thorough consultation, detailed medical evaluation, and careful adherence to pre- and post-operative instructions all play an important role in promoting a safe procedure and successful recovery.
